Read the room
DJing is curation and reading the room—what you play depends on who you're playing to and how you've fed the set.
DJing taught me it's really curation. What you play isn't about your favorite tracks—it comes down to two questions: what crowd are you playing to, and how have you fed your mixes?
Read the room first, then choose. The same tension runs under anything you make for other people—you're always playing to someone, and the good stuff is chosen for them, not for you.
