I walk my dog around the block twice a day, and there is a house on the route that I watched empty out. A family lived there—I saw them move in. Then one winter, after a blizzard, the driveway stayed unshoveled. No footprints in or out, no car. By spring the lawn was coming in tall, grass and weeds where somebody used to mow—nature does not wait for an invitation. I could guess at reasons all day. Who knows. What the house said was simpler than any reason: getting a thing and keeping a thing are two different projects, and the second one starts the moment the first one ends.
