the margin · on fatherhood
The loneliness of fatherhood
Plenty of mothers to relate to; almost no fathers to talk to about what intentional fatherhood is actually like.
There's no shortage of mothers to talk to about any of this. But who do I have to talk to about what it's like to be a man raising a son—intentional, present, and building a life all at the same time?
What father do I have to look up to, admire, commiserate with, reflect on the elements of fatherhood with? Kind of lonely. All I have is me and my thoughts and my dreams. And every other father in my circle is just trying to figure it out himself, with nobody to turn to.
I said it out loud, which was the first time I ever had. That's the part I'm handing you—not an answer, just the honest shape of it.
